Yogi Bear and Boo Boo, those iconic cartoon characters from the 1960s, are eyeing “pic-a-nic” baskets on the outskirts of Toronto. Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park & Camp Resort is the perfect spot to park that camper, especially if travelling with children. This cartoon-themed campground is quite the drive from your Lethbridge RV dealer, but who can resist? Yogi has matured somewhat and usually leaves the guests “pic-a-nic” baskets alone. The campground is open from early May through September. Exact dates vary each year.
Yogi and His Buddies
You’re greeted at the park entrance by a smiling Yogi statue, the perfect photo op. That’s only the beginning. Yogi Bear, his girlfriend Cindy Bear and his sidekick Boo Boo wander the park, waving, giving hugs and posing for pictures. Sure, there are people inside those fuzzy costumes but the kids don’t seem to mind.
Fun, Fun, Fun
Sometimes Yogi and friends will climb aboard the wagon that offers free rides around the park. Other amenities include a heated swimming pool with a sun deck, a beach volleyball court complete with sand and a huge playground for the kids. Play a game of horseshoes, some tetherball or go for a hike on one of the park’s nature trails. Pedal karts and the Mini-Putt golf course are available at an additional fee. Daily activity schedules are posted, including showings of Yogi Bear cartoons, sand castle building sessions, water relay races and movie nights. Weekend themes include celebrations for Canada Day, a Western Weekend and a Hawaiian-style party.
Canada’s Wonderland amusement park is only 15 kilometres from the campground. This giant outdoor playground is home to Dinosaur’s Alive, seven acres of animatronic dinosaurs and 16 roller coasters including the eye-popping Leviathan. Other nearby attractions include the Metro Toronto Zoo, the CN Tower and the Ontario Science Centre. Various discount coupons and brochures are available at the campground office.
Camping sites are available for RVs up to 45 feet, are wide enough for slide outs and many are pull-thrus. Fully serviced sites are offered as well as those with water and electric hook-ups and unserviced sites. Electrical service is 50 or 30 amp. Adaptors for campers requiring 15 amp services are offered. Tent camping is available in a separate area. Each campsite has its own picnic table and campfire ring and some are shaded.
Jellystone offers clean washrooms, free hot showers, pay phones, a laundry room and an onsite RV dump station. The convenience store is extra large, offering not only groceries and needed supplies but a large assortment of Yogi related items. When was the last time you went camping and your favorite souvenir turned out to be a cuddly, stuffed teddy bear with a jaunty hat and a big goofy smile?
